Understanding Behaviour from a Sensory Lens – Supporting Early Learners to Thrive (2-hour workshop)

Why This Workshop Matters

Every child’s behaviour tells a story - and often, that story begins with the senses. Educators are constantly supporting children who seek, avoid, or appear overwhelmed by sensory input. When we understand why these behaviours occur, we can respond with confidence and compassion, fostering environments where every child feels safe, engaged, and ready to learn.

This foundational workshop helps educators decode behaviour through a sensory lens, equipping them with practical tools and frameworks to create calmer, more connected, and inclusive learning spaces.

Learning objectives

Participants will:

  • Understand the difference between sensory health and sensory integration and processing

  • Learn about the structure and function of our sensory systems and how they influence learning and behaviour

  • Expand their understanding of sensory-based behaviours - prompting reflection through the question, “Could this be sensory?”

  • Build confidence in weaving sensory supports into everyday routines, play, and learning

What’s included

  • In-person, on-site delivery – over 90 minutes of content-rich learning plus 15 minutes of Q&A

  • Up to 26 participants, with additional attendees welcome at an extra per-person fee.

  • Resource booklet summarising key concepts and introducing a practical framework for understanding behaviour

  • 2 x free sensory checklists to help staff track patterns and deepen their understanding of children who may display sensory differences

  • A ready-to-use script for guiding sensitive parent conversations when sensory differences are suspected and may require extra support

  • Bonus resource: “Regulation Menu for Educators” - a practical tool to support staff wellbeing throughout the day

This workshop is ideal for early childhood teams seeking to build shared understanding, strengthen relationships with children, and bring a sensory-informed perspective to behaviour and learning.

Testimonials

‘I would really recommend this session to others, it contains a lot information about behaviour that sometimes we don’t observe in detail.’

‘Brings my positive way thinking back related to children’s behavior.’

“Intentionally setting up different spaces in the learning environment to meet children’s sensory needs – this was my most valuable take-away”

“It was so valuable learning about the high and low thresholds and the strategies to consider.”

Sensory Regulation in Action (Half-Day Workshop)

Why This Workshop Matters

Children’s behaviour is a form of communication, shaped by their sensory experiences and the environments around them. When educators can interpret and respond to these cues through a sensory lens, they can foster regulation, inclusion, and emotional wellbeing throughout the day.

This dynamic half-day workshop is designed for educators who want to move beyond theory and bring sensory regulation principles directly into practice. Through play and reflection, participants will feel the impact of sensory regulation in their own nervous system - gaining confidence to apply strategies that make a real difference in learning environments.

Have you noticed how something as simple as popping bubbles can be calming and regulating for one child, yet need to be adapted for another who becomes easily overstimulated? Or how scooter boards, a powerhouse of sensory input, can organise one child and be completely avoided by another? This workshop will show you how to intentionally scaffold play so every activity meets the unique sensory needs of each learner.

Educators who physically experience the regulating impact of activities become more attuned to children’s cues, better able to co-regulate, and more intentional in how they set up their environments and experiences for learning. This workshop helps teams create calmer, more connected, and regulation-ready environments where every child can thrive.

Learning objectives

Participants will:

  • Strengthen their understanding of sensory health and sensory integration and processing, and how these influence learning and behaviour

  • Develop deeper insight into the principles of up and down-regulation - explore what up- and down-regulation look like within each sensory system

  • Explore and analyse equipment and activities that can meet children’s regulation needs, discovering practical ways to embed these supports across daily routines

  • Engage in a collaborative environment audit, identifying strengths and opportunities for growth across play and learning spaces (e.g. what’s missing, what offers diversity and flexibility, and how environments shape regulation)

  • Build confidence in interpreting sensory behaviours and begin adapting sensory-informed strategies across play, transitions, and group experiences to support both individual and group regulation.

What’s included

  • In-person, on-site delivery - 3.5 hours of interactive, practical learning

  • Up to 16 participants, with additional attendees welcome at an extra per-person fee

  • Detailed resource booklet with key concepts, reflective questions, and a framework for understanding behaviour through a sensory lens

  • Environment audit template to guide reflection and action planning beyond the workshop

  • Practical exploration of selected equipment and resources for regulation

  • 2 x free sensory checklists for ongoing observation and insight

  • Bonus resources: A free parent conversation script to support collaborative approaches when sensory differences are suspected. In addition, a “Regulation Menu for Educators”, this resource helps staff recognise and respond to their own sensory and regulation needs.

This half-day session is ideal for early childhood services ready to move beyond awareness into action, creating environments and practices that truly help children (and educators) thrive.

* Please Note: If you’d prefer to hold the workshop off site additional fees may apply for venue hire.

Sensory Regulation in Action (Full-Day Workshop)

Why This Workshop Matters

Have you ever wondered why jumping on a trampette can feel wonderfully organising for one child, yet completely overstimulating for another? Or how a simple pop-up tunnel can support both children who need more energy (up-regulation) and those who need calming input (down-regulation)? This workshop will unpack the science and show you how to adapt everyday play materials to meet every child’s sensory needs.

An immersive, full-day experience where educators move beyond theory to embody sensory regulation. This workshop combines the science of the nervous system, Polyvagal theory, and foundational sensory principles with extended practical sessions and child-focused case work. Through play, movement, and reflection, participants will experience the principles of regulation firsthand - building the insight and confidence to translate sensory-informed principles into everyday practice and transform learning environments where all children can thrive.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Develop personal insight into their own sensory preferences, triggers, and glimmers – what nourishes and challenges your nervous system

  • Gain a practical understanding of key sensory processing concepts, including modulation, discrimination, and praxis and how these impact on behaviour

  • Experience embodied learning through hands-on play sessions that reveal the regulating properties of everyday activities. Our full-day workshop offers the time to explore over ten different sensory-rich activities and pieces of equipment

  • Explore the Polyvagal Theory - a powerful framework that complements the sensory lens, giving you a deeper, more nuanced understanding of behaviour and how safety, play, and connection shape learning and regulation.

  • Learn to adapt activities for both up- and down-regulation to meet the diverse regulation needs of children, applying this knowledge through real case studies.

What’s included

  • In-person delivery (6.5 hours)

  • Up to 16 participants, with additional attendees welcome at an extra per-person fee

  • Comprehensive resource booklet with key concepts, frameworks and examples of equipment / activity analysis using the principles of up and down regulation

  • Hands-on exploration of equipment and activities to support regulation

  • Child-focused reflection templates (Up/Down Regulation & Stress Circle Charts)

  • Environment audit template to guide reflection and action planning beyond the workshop

  • Practical exploration of selected equipment and resources for regulation

  • 2 x free sensory checklists for ongoing observation and insight

  • A free parent conversation script to support collaborative approaches when sensory differences are suspected

  • Bonus resource: “Regulation Menu for Educators” - helping staff recognise and respond to their own sensory and regulation needs

Your team will leave this session not just informed, but transformed, ready to bring sensory regulation to life across every part of the learning day.

* Please Note: If you’d prefer to hold the workshop off site additional fees may apply for venue hire.

Sensory processing difficulties can affect one or multiple senses. Signs of sensory issues vary depending on which sensory system is affected. This is why sensory processing difficulties can look very different from one child to another. Early intervention is key.
